Riviera Polo Shirt

James Bond in Casino Royale, 2006 — as worn by Daniel Craig

After the Miami operation, James Bond is flown back to the Bahamas by helicopter and steps into a bright coastal setting for a private meeting with M. The scene comes at a pause in Casino Royale’s early run of fieldwork, with Bond summoned away from action to account for himself as his future in MI6 is weighed.

The scene

After the Miami operation, James Bond is flown back to the Bahamas by helicopter and steps into a bright coastal setting for a private meeting with M. The scene comes at a pause in Casino Royale’s early run of fieldwork, with Bond summoned away from action to account for himself as his future in MI6 is weighed. As he moves from the aircraft into the open air, the navy Sunspel Riviera Polo Shirt is immediately legible against the pale, sun-struck surroundings, giving the moment a clean, stripped-back transition before the story pushes forward again.

The shirt is central to how Daniel Craig’s Bond was being redefined. Sunspel has said costume designer Lindy Hemming approached the company to bring Bond into the 21st century, using the Riviera’s British heritage and contemporary line as the basis for the look. Hemming and Sunspel then altered the polo for Craig specifically, shortening the sleeves and slimming the chest for a sharper athletic fit and easier movement. Hemming later described the choice as a collaboration of “quality and Britishness,” and the result in this scene is a Bond who looks less ceremonial than his predecessors but no less controlled.

On screen, the Riviera’s lightweight mesh knit and matte surface keep the navy color rich without making it glossy, so the shirt reads as cool and functional in the Bahamian heat. Its open collar and close fit frame Craig’s torso plainly as he exits the helicopter, while the hard daylight and rotor-stirred air give the garment a crisp, practical presence rather than a leisurely resort feel.

Archive — the object

Sunspel, the British heritage brand founded in Nottingham in 1860, is known for fabric innovation and refined cotton basics. The Riviera Polo Shirt traces back to the 1950s, when Peter Hill, great-grandson of the founder, developed a lightweight summer polo for the French Riviera.

For Casino Royale, costume designer Lindy Hemming worked with Sunspel to adapt the Riviera Polo for Daniel Craig's first outing as James Bond, refining the silhouette with a slimmer fit and shorter sleeves to emphasize Bond's athletic but understated look. On screen, Bond wears the shirt in a deep navy tone during the Bahamas sequence when he arrives by helicopter to meet M after Miami.

The current Riviera Polo is made in Portugal from 100% Supima cotton using Sunspel's lightweight mesh fabric, commonly referred to as Q75 or Quality 75. Compared with standard piqué, the cloth has a more open, breathable structure while retaining a soft hand and shape. Sunspel describes the cotton as extra-long-staple and fully traceable, sourced from California. The design features a streamlined body, soft collar, short placket, and warm-weather-focused construction.

Sunspel continues to sell the Riviera Polo as a core permanent style, and the Bond association remains one of the shirt's most recognizable cultural touchpoints.
