The scene
The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M is the watch Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in Casino Royale before the story settles into Montenegro’s tuxedo-and-poker formality. It is on his wrist in the film’s harder, outdoor stretches, including the opening chase material and the Bahamas run of surveillance and pursuit around Paradise Island, where Bond is still operating as a newly promoted 00 in motion rather than a card player at rest. The film later shifts him to the blue Seamaster Diver 300M for the casino scenes, which makes the Planet Ocean belong specifically to the rougher fieldwork side of the narrative.
That choice fits the character reset the film was making. Daniel Craig later said the Planet Ocean “felt correct” for his Bond because it was a big, substantial watch, and Lindy Hemming’s long-running rationale for Bond’s watches was grounded in his naval background and the idea that he should wear something modern, European, and believable for an operative. Hemming also pushed for a rubber strap for Craig’s Seamaster so it could work in the now-iconic Paradise Island sea-emergence moment, reinforcing the watch as equipment rather than ornament.
On screen, the Planet Ocean reads as blunt and functional: a large steel case, black dial, black bezel, and black rubber strap that register quickly in action framing. It is usually caught in brief wrist-level flashes, medium shots, and movement-heavy compositions, where the dark watch face and strap keep it visually tied to Bond’s body and task instead of isolating it as a luxury close-up.
The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M is the watch Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in Casino Royale before the story settles into Montenegro’s tuxedo-and-poker formality.
OMEGA introduced the first Seamaster Planet Ocean in 2005 as a more overtly professional offshoot of the Seamaster family, adding a heavier-duty dive specification to a line already closely associated with James Bond. In Casino Royale, Bond wears the first-generation Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial Chronometer Big Size, reference 2900. 50. 91, one of two OMEGA models supplied for the production alongside the blue Seamaster Diver 300M. Daniel Craig later said he wanted a watch that suited his version of Bond, and described the Planet Ocean as feeling correct for that tougher interpretation of the character. The watch itself is the large 45. 5 mm steel version, with a black dial, black dive bezel and black rubber strap.
Its case includes the Seamaster line’s helium escape valve at 10 o’clock, a screw-down crown, sapphire crystal and a 600-metre water-resistance rating. Power comes from OMEGA’s automatic calibre 2500, a COSC-certified Co-Axial chronometer with date and about 48 hours of reserve. On the dial, the Arabic numerals at 12, 6 and 9, broad-arrow hands and orange-tipped seconds hand give the watch a more instrumental look than the smoother blue Diver 300M used elsewhere in the film. That distinction is exactly why the Planet Ocean stands out in Casino Royale. Contemporary Bond coverage and later watch histories note that Bond wears the 2900.
50. 91 on rubber in the opening and more rugged action passages before the film shifts to the blue Seamaster for the Montenegro casino material. The black-on-black configuration makes the Planet Ocean read as equipment first and luxury object second. Its afterlife has been strong. Bond-focused collectors still identify the 2900. 50. 91 as the “Casino Royale Planet Ocean,” and an actual Daniel Craig-worn example from filming was reported sold at Antiquorum for $207,000. The reference is long discontinued, but it remains one of the key early Planet Ocean variants on the secondary market and an important marker of the moment Bond’s OMEGA watches became larger, darker and more utilitarian.
