The scene
In the Madagascar pre-title sequence of Casino Royale, James Bond tails bomb-maker Mollaka through a crowded market before the pursuit bursts into a half-finished construction site and keeps climbing. Carter is left behind almost immediately as Bond follows Mollaka across concrete walkways, up scaffolding and exposed steel, and finally onto the giant crane that dominates the site. This is the film’s first major action passage with Daniel Craig as 007, and production accounts note that the Madagascar building-site material was the first action footage shot for the film, staged on a derelict hotel site in the Bahamas before the chase carries Bond toward the Nambutu embassy.
The drawstring linen trousers fit the version of Bond that Casino Royale is introducing here: less polished, more physical, and dressed for heat and movement rather than display. Bond-focused costume coverage identifies the trousers as beige linen with a drawstring waist, and describes them as practical for the scene’s climate and exertion. That practicality aligns with Lindy Hemming’s stated aim for Casino Royale overall, which was to make Bond contemporary without losing the character’s essential identity.
On screen, the trousers are constantly in motion: running, vaulting, landing and scrambling as Craig absorbs impacts and keeps pace with Mollaka’s freerunning agility. Phil Méheux said the Madagascar sequence was graded for rich color to suggest tropical heat and dust, so the pale trousers read against rusted steel, raw concrete and sun-struck surfaces as part of the sequence’s harsh, stripped-down realism.

The drawstring linen trousers worn by Daniel Craig as James Bond in the Madagascar chase in Casino Royale were not a retail purchase but a production-made costume piece, designed under Lindy Hemming and made by Academy Costumes for the film. Hemming later recalled that the opening chase outfit was something she designed and had made in quantity for the sequence, with dozens of pairs of trousers produced to support the stunt-heavy shoot. That origin is why the garment is best treated as No Brand rather than assigned to an off-the-rack maker. Analysis of the surviving design details, later echoed by the official recreation, identifies the trousers as a relaxed straight-leg style cut from Irish linen woven by John England.
They have a drawstring waistband, slanted side pockets, two rear patch pockets and plain hems, all of which reinforce their deliberately unstructured look. The loose linen build was practical for the sequence’s running, climbing and jumping, while the pale stone-beige tone reads clearly on screen against Bond’s darker boots and belt in the hard daylight of the Madagascar scenes. Their appearance in Casino Royale is tied directly to the film’s reset of Bond’s image for Daniel Craig’s debut. Hemming’s costume approach for the opening mission favored utility over polish, and these trousers help establish Bond before the Brioni tailoring takes over later in the film.
They are also associated with the first scene Craig filmed as James Bond, which gives this otherwise humble garment an outsized place in the visual history of the reboot. That status eventually turned a one-off costume-shop item into a collector target. In 2026, Anthony Sinclair and Academy Costumes released a limited-edition recreation called the Madagascar Trousers, made from Irish linen and based on the original patterns and construction notes used for the 2006 production. For collectors, that release effectively became the only sanctioned route to owning this specific Bond trouser design.
