01
The scene
At the start of Casino Royale, James Bond chases bomb-maker Mollaka from a surveillance operation into the Madagascar construction-site pursuit that becomes the film’s first major action statement. The sequence was shot in the Bahamas, at the long-abandoned Coral Harbour hotel site near Nassau, with production erecting a 14-story steel frame and bringing in full-size cranes to build the vertical obstacle course. Sébastien Foucan, cast as Mollaka for his parkour background, leads Bond through unfinished floors, scaffolding and exposed girders before both men climb onto the cranes high above the site.
The action was designed as a largely physical set piece, with real stunt work and safety harnesses later removed digitally. In that moment, the fitted Sunspel Riviera Crew Neck T-Shirt reads as part of the reboot’s deliberate stripping-back of Bond. Lindy Hemming said Sunspel made “trendy tight T-shirts” for Daniel Craig, and also said she had long used Sunspel because its basics were classic, timeless and beautifully made.
Before the tuxedos and casino polish arrive, Bond is presented as newly promoted, hard-bodied and practical, a man defined by pursuit rather than display. Against Mollaka’s balletic freerunning, the close grey crew neck makes Bond look denser, more forceful and less ornamental. On the cranes, the shirt’s grey melange surface catches the hard sun without glamour, keeping Craig’s body clearly legible as he climbs, lands and fights in open air.

The object
Sunspel was founded in Nottingham in 1860 by textile innovator Thomas A. Hill, initially producing luxury garments in fine natural fibres including cashmere, silk, merino wool and Sea Island cotton. Its reputation rests on elevated essentials and underwear, and its own history positions the T-shirt as one of its defining garments. That heritage matters here: the Riviera Crew Neck T-Shirt belongs to a line Sunspel still treats as part of its modern identity, linking British knitwear expertise to a pared-back, athletic silhouette. For Casino Royale, Sunspel collaborated with costume designer Lindy Hemming to adapt its Riviera pieces for Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond.
Brand and retailer descriptions identify the Riviera Crew Neck T-Shirt as originally designed for Craig for the film, with a slim, tailored fit, short sleeves and a crew neck. It is made from 100% extra-long-staple Supima cotton from California in a smooth, durable midweight jersey, with production in Portugal. Bond clothing references note that the screen-used version was cut even trimmer than Sunspel’s standard tees, with a flatter overlocked neckline that sharpened the clean torso line Hemming wanted for Craig’s more physical Bond. In Casino Royale, the shirt is most closely associated with the Grey Melange version, worn during Bond’s early action passages and now closely tied to the film’s stripped-back reboot aesthetic.
Its afterlife has been unusually strong for such a simple object. Sunspel continues to sell the Riviera T-shirt as part of its core offer, explicitly tying it to Casino Royale, while menswear press and Bond-focused retailers still market the Grey Melange crew neck as a screen-accurate piece. That availability has helped turn it from a film costume basic into a durable collector’s reference point in modern Bond style.
