Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial

James Bond in Casino Royale, 2006 — as worn by Daniel Craig

In Casino Royale’s opening Madagascar pursuit, James Bond tears after Mollaka across an unfinished construction site before the chase carries on to the Nambutu embassy.

The scene — James Bond

In Casino Royale’s opening Madagascar pursuit, James Bond tears after Mollaka across an unfinished construction site before the chase carries on to the Nambutu embassy. The sequence was staged amid exposed concrete, scaffolding and heavy machinery in the Bahamas, with the embassy material shot separately on a Prague set, and it was one of the first action passages filmed for Daniel Craig’s debut as 007. In this stretch, though the confirmed product is the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial, the watch most consistently identified for the construction-site action is Bond’s larger black Planet Ocean, making the Diver 300M part of his broader Casino Royale watch wardrobe rather than the best-supported match for this exact moment.

That distinction matters because Casino Royale was conceived as a reset for Bond, stripping away gadget excess and emphasizing a harder, more physical agent. Lindy Hemming described building Craig’s Bond through precise, classic wardrobe choices, and the film’s watch strategy follows that logic: the blue-dial Seamaster Diver 300M remains the established Bond signature in the film overall, even as the Madagascar chase leans toward a more rugged, less decorative screen image.

Phil Méheux said the Madagascar material was graded for rich color, heat and dust, while Martin Campbell’s handheld camera and sharp cutting keep the action jagged and immediate. The construction site is photographed as a field of glare, concrete and motion, so any wristwatch reads only in flashes, subordinated to Bond’s momentum and the sequence’s punishing industrial scale.

The object

Omega’s Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial Chronometer ref. 2220. 80. 00 belongs to the Diver 300M line that Omega introduced in 1993, a range the brand itself describes as one of its most recognizable modern sports watches. By the time this reference arrived in the mid-2000s, Omega had updated the long-running Seamaster formula with its serially produced Co-Axial movement, making the 2220. 80. 00 a transitional Bond-era piece: visually continuous with the earlier blue-wave Seamaster Professional, but mechanically tied to Omega’s push toward George Daniels’ escapement in mainstream production. The watch keeps the established 41 mm steel Diver 300M case and bracelet architecture, with the familiar blue wave-pattern dial, scalloped blue bezel, skeletonized hands, applied markers, domed sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, and helium-escape valve at 10 o’clock.

Inside is Omega’s automatic calibre 2500, a COSC-certified Co-Axial movement based on the ETA 2892 architecture, with central seconds, date, and about 48 hours of power reserve. Rated to 300 metres and usually seen on the five-link steel bracelet, it sits in the sweet spot between luxury sports watch and purpose-built dive instrument. In Casino Royale, the ref. 2220. 80. 00 appears in the latter half of the film, after Bond’s early-action Planet Ocean scenes, and is most closely linked with the Montenegro stretch: the train meeting with Vesper Lynd and the casino sequences.

That placement matters, because the blue Seamaster reads as the more polished, established Bond watch within Daniel Craig’s reboot, bridging the franchise’s Brosnan-era Omega identity with the harder-edged new interpretation. Its afterlife has been unusually strong. Collectors prize it as the Casino Royale Seamaster and as the last blue-wave, pre-ceramic Bond Diver 300M before later design changes. The reference has long been discontinued rather than reissued outright, which has helped keep interest high on the secondary market among Bond fans and buyers who want the classic steel-and-blue Seamaster profile with the early Co-Axial calibre.
