Madagascar Shirt

James Bond in Casino Royale, 2006 — as worn by Daniel Craig

The Academy Costumes Madagascar Shirt is worn in Casino Royale’s Madagascar pursuit, the sequence that introduces Daniel Craig’s Bond in full motion after the black-and-white prologue.

The scene — James Bond

The Academy Costumes Madagascar Shirt is worn in Casino Royale’s Madagascar pursuit, the sequence that introduces Daniel Craig’s Bond in full motion after the black-and-white prologue. Bond tails Mollaka through a shanty-town edge and into a construction site dressed on location in the Bahamas to play Madagascar, with the chase carrying them up scaffolding, across unfinished floors and onto the cranes before continuing toward the embassy. Sébastien Foucan, credited as Mollaka and known for parkour, shares the scene with Craig throughout the run, making Bond’s pursuit a direct contest between free-running grace and brute-force improvisation.

That shirt matters because Casino Royale is deliberately presenting Bond as newly promoted and not yet polished into the finished 007. Martin Campbell said he wanted a more physical, rugged Bond, and Lindy Hemming described the opening chase outfit as a shirt she designed and had made with linen trousers, producing around 40 shirts and 40 pairs of trousers for Craig and the stunt team. The relaxed printed shirt keeps Bond plausibly anonymous in the tropical crowd, but it also belongs to Hemming’s broader rethink of Craig’s Bond through more casual clothes that stress youth, action and rough edges rather than inherited elegance.

On screen, the shirt is usually seen in hard sun, dust and concrete glare. Handheld camerawork dominates the construction-site section, and the shirt flashes against rusted steel, pale cement and sky as Bond climbs, crashes through obstacles and powers after Mollaka. Its loose, open look reads clearly in wider crane shots and in tighter, jostling frames that emphasize sweat, impact and speed.

The object

Academy Costumes is a London costume house founded by Adrian Gwillym in 1984, part of the generation of specialist makers that grew with Britain’s film, television and advertising industries in the 1980s. Research on London costume houses describes Academy’s original base in the Blackfriars railway arches and notes Gwillym’s ambition to build “the best workroom in the world.” By the 2010s the company had relocated south of the river, but it remained identified with bespoke production, made-to-measure tailoring, textiles and vintage-informed costume work for screen and stage. For Casino Royale, Academy Costumes made James Bond’s Madagascar Shirt under Lindy Hemming, with the printed cloth produced through Academy and cut from the original Liberty printed cotton fabric.

The shirt is a short-sleeved sport shirt with a soft spear-point collar, front buttoning, a single chest pocket, a straight square hem with side vents, and sleeve ends finished with adjustable button tabs. Its pale beige-yellow ground, muted striping and red floral print give it the washed, tropical character seen on screen. The shirt was created for Bond’s opening Madagascar pursuit and is tied closely to Daniel Craig’s first scene filmed as James Bond. Academy and later Anthony Sinclair both identified it as part of the opening chase costume, and the recreation was produced from the original Academy patterns and techniques developed for the film.

That context explains why the shirt reads less like standard resort wear than a purpose-built action costume with a deliberately relaxed silhouette. Its afterlife has been unusually strong for such a specific piece. Anthony Sinclair, in collaboration with Academy Costumes, later reissued the Madagascar Shirt as a made-in-England limited edition, using the original Liberty fabric and original pattern details. Availability has been limited rather than continuous, helping keep the shirt a niche collector item among Bond clothing enthusiasts.
