Mountain Light II

James Bond in Spectre, 2015 — as worn by Daniel Craig

High above Sölden in the Ötztal Alps, James Bond crosses the snowy approach to the Höffler Klinik in the Austrian section of Spectre, where the clinic exteriors were filmed at the ICE-Q restaurant on the Gaislachkogl mountain.

The scene

High above Sölden in the Ötztal Alps, James Bond crosses the snowy approach to the Höffler Klinik in the Austrian section of Spectre, where the clinic exteriors were filmed at the ICE-Q restaurant on the Gaislachkogl mountain. The Danner Mountain Light II boots are part of the cold-weather rig Bond wears as he moves over icy ground before the action spills into the mountain chase, the same sequence that sends him after Hinx and Madeleine Swann in a light aircraft and across the snowbound roads below.

Against the white terrain and the clinic’s sharp contemporary lines, the boots read as working equipment rather than a styled flourish. That practicality fits the way Spectre’s makers described Bond in these mountain scenes. The official Bond site notes that Danner’s relationship with the series began when its boots were worn in Spectre’s Austrian mountain scenes, and production accounts repeatedly stress the punishing conditions of the shoot: freezing cold, brilliant sunshine, and roads that could turn to ice between runs. In that context, the Mountain Light II helps define Bond less as a lounge-suited icon than as a field operative dressed for exposure, traction, and speed in hostile terrain.

On screen, the boots are usually framed from mid-calf down with Bond’s trousers tucked in, so their lace-to-toe front and compact hiking profile stay legible without isolating them in close-up. The alpine light is hard and bright, and the black finish cuts cleanly against snow, rock, and glass, giving the footwear a severe silhouette that anchors the whole winter look.

Archive — the object

Danner was founded in 1932 by Charles Danner, and the Portland company built its name on hard-wearing boots for logging, work, hiking, and uniform use. In Danner’s own history, 1979 is the key date for the Mountain Light family: that was the year the company introduced its first waterproof boot with a GORE-TEX liner, a design that evolved into the Mountain Light and helped define Danner’s heritage hiking line. The Mountain Light II remains one of the brand’s Portland-made staples, tying the model directly to the company’s long-running domestic manufacturing identity. As sold by Danner, the Mountain Light II in Black is a 5-inch boot built with a one-piece full-grain leather upper, a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX liner, and the brand’s handcrafted stitchdown construction.

That stitchdown build is central to the boot’s character, creating a wider platform underfoot and allowing the pair to be recrafted. The model’s other standard specifications include a lace-to-toe lacing system, a Vibram Kletterlift outsole, a fiberglass shank, and a Danner Airthotic half-length molded polyurethane instep intended to support the heel and arch. In Spectre, James Bond wears the black Mountain Light II during the Austrian Sölden and Höffler Klinik sequences, where the boot’s compact 5-inch height and monochrome finish suit the film’s alpine action wardrobe.

Bond-focused clothing references and contemporary style coverage identified the screen-used model as the Mountain Light II 5" Black, distinguishing it from the brown versions more commonly associated with classic hiking imagery. The boot has had a modest afterlife beyond the film, sustained by Bond collectors as well as Danner enthusiasts. It remained available through Danner retail channels in black, and the company’s later Bond-adjacent publicity around No Time To Die kept attention on its earlier Spectre appearance. That continuing availability has made the Mountain Light II less a vanished costume piece than a still-obtainable production boot with a clear screen pedigree.
