The scene

“High above Sölden, Austria, James Bond wears the Vuarnet PX 027 Glacier during the Hoffler Klinik approach on the Gaislachkogl summit, moving through the exposed alpine glare before he meets Madeleine Swann at the clinic and again when he charges back into the snow after she is seized by Mr. Hinx.”

High above Sölden, Austria, James Bond wears the Vuarnet PX 027 Glacier during the Hoffler Klinik approach on the Gaislachkogl summit, moving through the exposed alpine glare before he meets Madeleine Swann at the clinic and again when he charges back into the snow after she is seized by Mr. Hinx. The clinic exterior was filmed at the ice Q restaurant on Gaislachkogl, more than 3,000 meters above sea level, with the surrounding Sölden area and glacier road used across the Austrian unit.

Production in Sölden ran through winter conditions, with the later pursuit feeding directly into the mountain-road action staged with Bond’s plane against Hinx’s convoy. In that moment, the glasses read less as luxury than as survival gear. Vuarnet’s own heritage positions the Glacier model as mountaineering eyewear, and that practical lineage suits a Bond look built for severe weather rather than urban polish. Jany Temime has described designing Bond around action-sequence demands and multiple stunt doubles, which helps explain why this alpine outfit feels engineered from the outside in: dark outerwear, carryall, and technical eyewear all serving movement, cold and reflected light.

Against the white snow and the clinic’s hard modern architecture, the round lenses, leather side shields and nose guard cut a dark, compact silhouette across Bond’s face. Here the light is crisp, pale and high-key, so the sunglasses register clearly whenever Bond is isolated against open snowfields or framed outside the summit complex.

The object

Vuarnet’s Glacier line sits deep in the brand’s French mountain heritage. The house was founded in 1957 in Paris around Roger Pouilloux’s mineral-lens technology, and its history is closely tied to high-altitude sport and glare control. Vuarnet introduced the first Glacier model in 1974 specifically for mountaineering, turning a technical alpine tool into one of the label’s signature forms. That background matters for the PX 027 seen in Spectre: it belongs to a family of eyewear conceived for snow, ice, wind and reflected light rather than for fashion first. The PX 027 Glacier is defined by its round mineral-glass lenses, mixed construction and protective leatherwork.

Vintage examples and current Vuarnet Glacier models share the same core architecture: a rigid frame paired with removable leather side shields and a leather nose bridge guard to block peripheral glare and cold air. Vuarnet still describes its Glacier styles as mountain icons built around mineral glass lenses made in France for intense light conditions, and that functional DNA is visible in Bond’s black-framed pair. The screen-used style is generally identified as a vintage PX 027 or PX5000 configuration, with the white temple branding and dark leather protection pieces matching period Vuarnet production. In Spectre, costume designer Jany Temime dressed Daniel Craig’s Bond for the Austrian snow sequences with this vintage alpine model, an unusually utilitarian choice within the Craig-era wardrobe.

Vuarnet itself has acknowledged that Bond wore the Glacier in the 2015 film, and Bond-focused product research has consistently identified the pair as the vintage PX 027/PX5000 rather than a modern reissue. That appearance gave the old Glacier renewed visibility among collectors. Original PX 027 examples are no longer regular-production items, but Vuarnet continues to issue Glacier Round and related Glacier models that preserve the removable shields, nose piece and mineral-lens construction that made the vintage version so distinctive.
