Herringbone Overcoat

James Bond in Spectre, 2015 — as worn by Daniel Craig

In Rome, James Bond arrives for Marco Sciarra’s funeral after the Mexico City mission has killed Sciarra and sent Bond to identify the organization behind him.

The scene

In Rome, James Bond arrives for Marco Sciarra’s funeral after the Mexico City mission has killed Sciarra and sent Bond to identify the organization behind him. The sequence begins outside the chapel and continues into the cemetery colonnade, with Bond watching mourners descend the long white steps before moving closer to Lucia Sciarra, the widow at the center of the procession. The screenplay places the scene in late afternoon mist, with tough-looking mourners, bodyguards, and Lucia in a black veil; after the service, Bond approaches her, and that first contact is cut short by her protection detail.

The funeral material was shot in the second half of February 2015 at Rome’s Museo della Civiltà Romana, where production used the main entrance, the travertine-columned portico, and built tombs between the columns for the graveside section. The Tom Ford Herringbone Overcoat sharpens Bond’s cover within that ritual of mourning. Jany Temime designed Spectre’s wardrobe and continued Bond’s collaboration with Tom Ford, shaping Craig’s clothes around a severe, controlled silhouette.

In this moment the coat reads as operational camouflage: formal enough for a criminal patriarch’s burial, but still unmistakably Bond in its disciplined double-breasted structure. On screen, Mendes and Hoyte van Hoytema stage the funeral with measured symmetry and slow, deliberate movement. Bond is first held at a distance against the chapel approach, then threaded through the travertine columns so the overcoat’s dark herringbone sits in crisp contrast to pale stone, white marble steps, and the muted haze of late day.

Archive — the object

Tom Ford launched his eponymous luxury house in April 2005 with longtime business partner Domenico De Sole after Ford’s transformative run at Gucci. The brand began with fragrance and eyewear, opened its first flagship at 845 Madison Avenue in New York in 2007, and quickly established menswear as a core pillar. By the mid-2010s, Tom Ford had become inseparable from Daniel Craig’s Bond, supplying his wardrobe across three consecutive films, including Spectre. The Tom Ford Herringbone Overcoat identified for Spectre was made in Italy from a silk-and-cashmere blend and finished with a subtle woven herringbone pattern, notched lapels, a chest pocket, and a single vented hem.

That specification places it firmly within the label’s polished tailoring vocabulary: luxurious cloth, clean lines, and a soft but controlled silhouette rather than a heavy military build. Even as an overcoat, it reads like an extension of Tom Ford suiting, with texture doing the visual work instead of overt detailing. For Spectre, Tom Ford worked closely with costume designer Jany Temime, who said she designed what she wanted and then selected fabrics from Ford’s collection, with fittings handled by his Italian tailors. Tom Ford’s own announcement for the film stated that the brand created Bond’s eveningwear, suits, shirts, knitwear, ties, accessories, bespoke pieces and casualwear, marking Craig’s third straight Bond collaboration with the house.

On screen, the Herringbone Overcoat appears in Bond’s dark, formal wardrobe and reinforces the severe elegance of his undercover look. Retail listings tied to the film placed the coat at Harrods and Tom Ford boutiques at £3,025, and it has long since sold out. Its afterlife has been typical of Craig-era Bond tailoring: strong enthusiast interest, scattered resale appearances, and a reputation as one of the harder Spectre outerwear pieces to track down in original form.
