01
The scene
In the Matera prologue of No Time to Die, Madeleine Swann appears in the Rouje GABIN Dress during the couple’s last stretch of peace before the film turns toward Vesper Lynd’s grave and the attack that follows. She walks beside James Bond through the old city’s narrow lanes and stepped stone passages, the two of them moving through the Sassi in a sequence built around their temporary retreat from espionage. The dress is most legible in motion: a red floral midi wrap shape with a V neckline, short sleeves, front tie, and buttoned front, set off against Matera’s pale limestone streets and walls.
The choice suits Madeleine’s presentation in these scenes as a distinctly softer, more intimate figure than the guarded woman Bond first knew. Costume designer Suttirat Anne Larlarb has said Madeleine Swann serves a different function from the film’s other major characters, and the Matera wardrobe reflects that separation from the sharper codes used elsewhere in the film. Rouje’s own description of the GABIN as the label’s iconic wrap dress, repeatedly reissued in changing prints, aligns with the character’s understated French femininity here, while the floral print and fluid cut emphasize ease rather than armor.
On screen, the dress is framed in bright southern Italian daylight, with the camera often letting its red ground flare against the city’s chalky stone. The fabric reads as light and mobile as Madeleine walks, and the warm sunlight gives the whole moment a deceptively relaxed, romantic clarity before the sequence darkens.

The object
Rouje was founded in Paris in 2016 by Jeanne Damas, and the label’s own history places the GABIN Dress at the center of its identity. Rouje states that the style debuted in 2017 and quickly became the house’s absolute bestseller, with a floral print, wrap construction, and instantly recognizable silhouette that helped define the brand’s image for years afterward. Within Rouje’s current presentation of Jeanne Damas’s wardrobe, the GABIN is still described as the ultimate expression of the Rouje silhouette, which explains why it reads less like a seasonal piece than a permanent signature. The GABIN Dress is a midi wrap dress built around a V-neckline, short sleeves, front fastening, and an adjustable waist tie.
Rouje’s current product details for red floral versions specify five pearl buttons at the front, shoulder gathers, and an unlined construction, while the brand continues to describe the model as its most iconic and timeless dress. The line is regularly produced in fluid viscose-based fabrics, which give the dress the soft drape and movement associated with the style’s relaxed, vintage-leaning Parisian look. In No Time to Die, Madeleine Swann wears a red floral GABIN Dress during the Matera material that frames her romantic scenes with Bond. The screen-used style has been widely identified by costume-tracking sources as Rouje’s GABIN in the Jonquille Rouge print, a vivid red floral colorway that suits the dress’s established 1940s-inflected wrap shape and easy femininity.
Its afterlife has been unusually strong because Rouje never treated the GABIN as a one-off. The brand still sells GABIN dresses in multiple prints and colors, and its own retrospective singles the design out as the piece that became a symbol of Rouje. That continuing availability, combined with the Bond association, has kept Madeleine Swann’s version in active circulation among collectors and screen-style hunters, even when the exact Jonquille Rouge iteration is harder to source than newer reissues and near-neighbor floral releases.
