01
The scene
At Valentin Zukovsky’s caviar fishery on the Caspian Sea, James Bond pulls up in the silver BMW Z8 after the Azerbaijan pipeline sequence and meets Zukovsky on the factory’s exposed walkways above the water. The setting is all industrial platforms, timber structures and pipework, and the conversation is cut short when Elektra King’s attack helicopters sweep over the fishery. Using the Z8’s remote-control key fob, Bond summons the car into position and triggers its concealed ground-to-air missiles, bringing down one helicopter before a second aircraft swings in low and slices the BMW cleanly in half with its suspended cutting wire.
The moment turns the BMW Z8 from a polished Bond accessory into a deliberately short-lived advantage. Official Bond material for the film stresses the car’s gadget package — remote-control driving and hidden missiles — only to note that none of it can save it from the helicopter blade, which gives the sequence its sting. The Z8 was also the last car in BMW’s three-film Bond partnership, so its abrupt destruction plays as a pointed reversal: Bond arrives with elegance and technical superiority, then loses both almost instantly under concentrated attack.
On screen, the car is framed against dark water and the sprawling fishery set, its silver body catching the cold night lighting. The sequence was shot on Pinewood’s paddock tank, enlarged to accommodate the huge wooden set, and filmed at night so the tank could disappear into the background while thousands of fibre optics created a distant glimmer behind the action.

The object
The BMW Z8, developed under the internal code E52, was conceived as a modern homage to the 1956–1959 BMW 507. Its exterior was designed by Henrik Fisker, with interior design by Scott Lempert under Chris Bangle’s leadership. Built as a retro-futurist halo roadster, the Z8 used an all-aluminium spaceframe chassis with aluminium body panels and was largely hand-finished in Munich.
Power came from a front-mid-mounted 4.9-litre (4,941 cc) BMW Motorsport S62 V8 shared with the E39 M5, producing about 400 PS (395 hp) and 500 N⋅m of torque, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and near-50/50 weight distribution. Period performance figures included 0–62 mph in around 4.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
For The World Is Not Enough, BMW supplied the Z8 as the final car in its three-film Bond partnership after the Z3 in GoldenEye and the 750iL in Tomorrow Never Dies. Because filming began before full customer production was underway, the screen-used cars were not standard retail examples; production used pre-production material, including a prototype shell and studio-built replicas created by Propshop at Pinewood, with fiberglass bodies and custom underpinnings for stunt work. On screen, Bond’s Z8 is presented as a left-hand-drive Arctic Silver roadster fitted with fictional Q Branch upgrades such as remote control via the key fob, titanium armour plating, and side-mounted ground-to-air missiles.
