The scene

In the South Africa endgame of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Ethan Hunt wears the Matchless London Mission Action Blouson through the canyon-and-biplane pursuit after Gabriel’s escape with the kill switch. The chase moves across the green escarpments of Blyde River Canyon into the Drakensberg for the mid-air transfer and wing-walking, with Gabriel, played by Esai Morales, drawing Hunt into a fight from the landing gear to the wing and toward the cockpit. Editor Eddie Hamilton said the finished passage runs about fifteen minutes.

The jacket reads less like a hero costume than stripped-down mission equipment, fitting Ethan at the point where the film reduces everything to pursuit, endurance and physical nerve. Matchless describes the Mission Action Blouson as the only original jacket designed specifically for Tom Cruise for the film, and its short blouson length, stand collar and close body keep Ethan’s outline compact as he runs ravines, clings to the wheel assembly and hauls himself onto the wing. In story terms, he is alone against Gabriel, separated from the rest of the IMF team while the wider race against the Entity continues elsewhere.

Fraser Taggart said the filmmakers wanted the audience to feel they were participating, “at the heart of the action,” so the sequence favors unusually close aerial photography rather than distant long-lens coverage. He also noted that South Africa’s hard, contrasty light shaped practical decisions, and the jacket’s muted green sits cleanly against pale rock, bright sky and the exposed metal of the vintage Stearman.

The object

The Matchless London Mission Action Blouson is a film-linked leather jacket created specifically for Tom Cruise for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, making it an unusually direct crossover between a heritage outerwear label and a current franchise costume piece. Matchless’s roots go back to Henry Herbert Collier’s London business, which began under the Matchless name in the late 19th century and produced its first motorcycle in 1899 before the marque’s identity broadened into riding apparel and, later, luxury leather outerwear. That lineage matters here: the jacket is presented not as a generic movie tie-in, but as part of a brand that still trades on motorcycling history and British industrial heritage.

According to Matchless’s own listing, the Mission Action Blouson is made in Italy from soft Nappa leather with a light antiquing treatment. Its construction is notably restrained: a slim fit, a shorter blouson cut, two side pockets with snap-button fastening, a 100 percent viscose twill lining, and a stand collar that can be shaped thanks to an internal metal wire. Those details push it away from a heavy belted biker jacket and toward something cleaner and more mobile, while still preserving the tactile richness and broken-in surface associated with antiqued leather. For Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Matchless identifies this as the only original jacket designed specifically for Tom Cruise for the film.

The screen-linked version corresponds to the British Green colorway, a muted dark green that gives the piece a tactical cast without losing the polished finish of luxury leather. Its afterlife is unusually clear because Matchless has sold the jacket commercially rather than leaving it as a one-off costume. The Mission Action Blouson has appeared through the brand’s retail channels as a premium ready-to-wear piece, which gives collectors and franchise completists a verified route to the exact design rather than a lookalike or later reinterpretation.
