At a lavish Venetian gala in The Tourist, Elise Clifton-Ward enters a grand ballroom in a historic palazzo after receiving instructions tied to Alexander Pearce, moving through chandeliers, evening dress, classical music, and watchful faces under active surveillance. The opulent setting carries an atmosphere of clandestine elegance and high-stakes tension as she takes her place with poised detachment, fully aware that Scotland Yard and other observers are tracking her every move. A courier discreetly leaves an envelope at her table, turning the formal event into a coded exchange staged in plain sight.
The gown sharpens Elise’s control in the scene. She sits, waits, and reads the room with the composure of someone accustomed to being watched yet never fully understood, acknowledging the surveillance with subtle glances while maintaining an aura of sophisticated mystery. When Frank Tupelo joins her and the evening shifts to the dance floor, the dress carries that duality forward, balancing aristocratic polish with the secrecy and danger that define her role.
On screen, the black gown is framed against candlelit gold, pale marble, and the scale of the Venetian interior, its dark volume standing out in the crowd. The layered tulle gains depth as Elise moves from table to ballroom floor, and her waltz with Frank gives the skirt its fullest motion, transforming the dress from an elegant formal silhouette into a flowing shadow inside the ballroom.
The object
This gown was a custom costume piece created for The Tourist by Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood rather than a retail designer model. Production and costume coverage identify it as one of Elise Clifton-Ward’s handmade screen-specific looks, designed to evoke timeless, minimalist elegance with a classical, Hitchcockian sensibility while complementing the grandeur of Venice.
The dress is a black evening ball gown constructed from black silk tulle, net, and satin, with a fitted semi-sweetheart corset bodice and a full voluminous A-line skirt. It features an off-the-shoulder design with a sheer tulle off-shoulder cape effect and a pleated layered edge, combining structured satin support with airy outer layers that give the skirt depth, softness, and controlled movement under ballroom lighting. Reports on the production note that multiple versions were made because of the labor-intensive hand assembly required for filming.
On screen, the gown is paired with an antique diamond choker adapted from a tiara in Robert Procop’s private collection, and the dress was specifically designed to frame both Jolie’s beauty and the necklace rather than overpower them. The result is an elegant, character-specific formal silhouette engineered for cinematic motion and for Elise’s poised, enigmatic presence at the gala.
